Wafa Ghnaim will be presenting two designs from the book, Tatreez & Tea: Embroidery and Storytelling in the Palestinian Diaspora, available for digital download on Amazon, iTunes and Nook.

In Tatreez & Tea, Wafa Ghnaim brings traditional Palestinian embroidery to life by revealing a profound depth in meaning, inspiration and storytelling power that is encapsulated in each motif. Ghnaim gently decodes layers of meaning in each embroidery design by guiding her readers through each thread, stitch and skilled technique, further evolving her narrative into a sacred journaling of oral histories passed on by her maternal ancestors and ultimately inspiring her confidence to reclaim her Palestinian identity in the diaspora.

Ghnaim unravels the stories of each dress and design by illuminating the experiences of her mother, Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim, who learned embroidery from her mother and grandmother in mid-century Syria. Palestinian women have gathered together for generations with their daughters to work collectively on embroidery projects, bonding with one another over a cup of tea. Ghnaim’s mother found solace in continuing the tradition with her own daughters.

At this event, Wafa will share the storytelling traditions and patterns of two designs: The Gardens and The Story of Cleopatra designs.

This event is free and open to the public.
