TATREEZ COMPANION is a 65-page, portable, light weight, full-color teaching and stitching booklet designed as a practical supplement for students and teachers of Palestinian embroidery (tatreez) in the diaspora.

Assembled and curated by Wafa Ghnaim, founder of the Tatreez Institute, TATREEZ COMPANION brings together more than 50 traditional Palestinian embroidery patterns, a quick-reference guide to three cross-stitch methodologies, historical photographs, stitching guidance, and a statement addressing cultural appropriation. Its three-method cross-stitch reference guide uses the terminology taught in Ghnaim's classes, while the patterns progress in complexity to help novice embroiderers develop the skills needed for larger projects, including tapestries and dresses.

TATREEZ COMPANION is intended as a supplemental teaching and stitching resource, not as a comprehensive history of Palestinian embroidery or an original pattern-design book. Many of the patterns were digitized from traditional Palestinian dresses held in museums and collections in North America and Europe, as well as from an embroidered wall hanging recovered from beneath the rubble in Gaza in 2023--however, the designs are ultimately traditional Palestinian motifs, and some may therefore resemble patterns found in other sources.

This booklet was created in response to students' need for an accessible, portable resource that could be used during and beyond virtual tatreez classes, as they were returning to in-person stitching circles after the COVID pandemic. Many students wished to have a physical book rather than digital patterns online. This booklet attempts to address that need. It is particularly suited to workshops, educational programs, community events, and independent stitchers seeking a brief introduction to Palestinian embroidery in a public event or stitching circle.
